Question 1

How big is an acre?

Accepted Answer

4,840 square yards, or 4,046.86 square metres. It began as the area a team of eight oxen could plough in a day, which is why it is a long thin shape of one furlong by one chain rather than a square.

Question 2

How many acres are in a hectare?

Accepted Answer

About 2.471. A hectare is 10,000 square metres, an acre is 4,046.86, so a hectare is a little under two and a half acres.

Question 3

What is a rood?

Accepted Answer

A quarter of an acre, or 1,011.71 square metres. Land was traditionally recorded in acres, roods and perches, written as 3-2-15 for three acres, two roods and fifteen perches.

Question 4

What is the difference between a hide and a carucate?

Accepted Answer

They describe the same amount of land, roughly 120 acres, but come from different systems. The hide was the Anglo-Saxon assessment unit; the carucate was its equivalent in the Danelaw counties settled by the Danes. Neither was a fixed area so much as a measure of what land could support or produce.

Question 5

How many square feet are in a square metre?

Accepted Answer

10.7639. When comparing British and European property listings, multiply square metres by roughly 10.8 to get square feet.
