Purpose and Intended Use

The Great British Converter is provided for educational and general interest purposes. The site converts between British and metric measurement units, and documents the history of those units and the systems they belonged to.

Accuracy of Conversions

We take accuracy seriously and check our figures against published standards wherever they exist. Even so, we make no warranty as to the accuracy, completeness or reliability of any conversion on this site.

Do not rely on this tool for engineering, medical, scientific, legal, commercial or any other purpose where an error would matter.

Historical Units Varied

This is worth stating plainly, because it is the most likely source of disagreement. A great many of the units documented here varied by region, by trade and by century. A bushel of oats was not a bushel of wheat. A Scots mile was not an English one. A hundredweight has meant several different things, and a hogshead still does.

Where a unit varied, we give the most commonly cited figure and say so in the entry. Another reputable source may reasonably give a different one. Historical conversions on this site should be treated as indicative rather than definitive.

Historical Information

The histories, etymologies and contextual notes throughout this site, including the Measurement Archive, the Scales and Systems section and the collected sayings, are provided for general interest. Where the evidence for an origin is contested or unproven, we say so rather than choosing the more entertaining version. Nonetheless, this material is not peer-reviewed and should not be relied upon for academic or professional research.

Corrections Are Welcome

If you believe a figure or a historical claim on this site is wrong, we would genuinely like to know, and we will correct it. Please write to admin@thegreatbritishconverter.co.uk, ideally with a source.
