Centilitre (cl)

Modern equivalent

10 millilitres = 0.01 litres

One hundredth of a litre, and the customary labelling unit for European wine and spirit bottles.

A standard wine bottle is labelled 75cl rather than 750ml, and a spirit bottle 70cl rather than 700ml, purely by convention of the drinks trade. The centilitre sits comfortably between the millilitre and the litre for quantities in the hundreds of millilitres, giving tidier figures on a label without sacrificing precision.
