Corf

Modern equivalent

4 to 7 hundredweight

An underground mining container used in British collieries to haul newly hewn coal from the tunnel face to the surface.

Initially built as a heavy wicker basket or sled before transitioning to wooden and iron trams, the corf acted as the primary measure of a miner’s underground productivity. Hewers were paid based on the number of filled corves they sent up the pit, making its standard size a frequent point of labour dispute.
