Keel

Modern equivalent

21.54 tonnes

An industrial weight unit equal to 8 Newcastle chaldrons, named after the flat-bottomed boats that ferried coal down the River Tyne.

Serving as both a volumetric watercraft capacity and a rigid commercial unit, a keel represented the exact cargo capacity of traditional Tyne river craft. The term was deeply embedded in northern labour organisation, dock tolls, and shipping contracts.
