Kilopascal (kPa)

Modern equivalent

1,000 Pascals = 0.145 psi

One thousand pascals, the practical metric working unit for everyday and structural pressures.

The pascal itself is inconveniently small for practical work, since ordinary atmospheric pressure runs to six figures. The kilopascal brings those numbers into a manageable range, which is why it appears on tyre placards beside psi, in structural load calculations, and throughout engineering specifications drawn up since metrication.
