Pebibyte (PiB)
Modern equivalent
1,125,899,906,842,624 bytes = 1.126 petabytes
Exactly 1,125,899,906,842,624 bytes, being two to the power of fifty, and the binary counterpart to the decimal petabyte.
At the pebibyte the divergence reaches twelve and a half per cent, which in a data centre is the difference between fitting a workload and buying another rack. The prefix follows the same construction as the others: peta becomes pebi, from binary, with the bi syllable marking the powers of two. The International Electrotechnical Commission defined the whole family in 1998 and the naming has been mocked steadily ever since, though nobody has proposed anything better and the ambiguity it resolves is entirely real.
