Pot (Fish)

Modern equivalent

Undefined; 3 pots to a pad, but 2 pots to a half-pad

An undefined trawl-fish measure recorded at Folkestone in the 1830s, used alongside the pad.

The pot is included here chiefly because its arithmetic is impossible. Three pots made a pad and two pots made a half-pad, which cannot both be true of a fixed quantity, and no contemporary source explains the discrepancy. The likeliest reading is that the pot was a container of roughly known size rather than a defined measure, and that the two relationships served different purposes in the same market. It stands as a useful reminder that customary measures were working conventions rather than mathematical systems, and that the people using them were rarely troubled by the inconsistency.
