Stack (Wood)

Modern equivalent

108 cubic feet = 3.06 cubic metres

One hundred and eight cubic feet of stacked wood, being the customary British firewood measure.

The stack served British firewood dealing as the cord served the American, and at 108 cubic feet against 128 it is the smaller of the two. Both measure the pile rather than the wood, and both were checked against a frame rather than by calculation. The distinction between the two units caused a certain amount of confusion in the transatlantic timber trade, and a merchant quoting a price per unit was well advised to say which unit he meant.
