Swill

Modern equivalent

Approx. one third of a cran

An East Anglian wicker basket with multiple handles, used to land herring and holding one-third of a cran.

The swill was tailored to the ergonomic demands of wet-dock unloading. Its distinct woven structure allowed seawater to drain quickly while protecting delicate fish bodies from crushing during transport to curing yards.
