Warp

Modern equivalent

Exactly 4 units

A rapid dockside counting tally of exactly four fish, born from the ergonomics of grabbing two fish in each hand.

The warp demonstrates how manual labour shaped historical numbering systems. By picking up two fish in each hand, tallymen could count high volumes at lightning speed without mechanical aids. The Cornish warp of four fish is not the only one. In the Welsh herring fishery a warp was a tally fish set aside for every two score, so that the term denoted forty fish rather than four. Two trades, one word, an order of magnitude between them, and no evidence that either was aware of the other’s usage.
