“A stone's throw”

What it means

A short distance.

Where it comes from

Before standardised measurement reached ordinary people, distances were described by what a body could do: a stone’s throw, a bowshot, an hour’s walk.

How sure are we?

Ancient and cross-linguistic. Comparable expressions exist in Greek, Latin and Old Norse, all using a body-scale action in place of a number.
