Dog-Watch

Modern equivalent

2 hours

A Royal Navy maritime tradition dividing evening hours into two short shifts.

By splitting the evening hours into two dog-watches (4–6 PM and 6–8 PM), ships rotated the crew’s watch schedule daily. This ensured sailors never stood the exact same night watch two nights in a row.
