Quarantine

Modern equivalent

40 days

A traditional 40-day legal period originating from medieval isolation rules for incoming vessels.

Derived from the Italian *quaranta giorni*, quarantine governed both maritime plague isolation and a widow’s legal forty-day right to remain in her deceased husband’s estate.
