Quarter Cran

Modern equivalent

9.375 imperial gallons = 42.6 litres

One quarter of a cran, made a legal measure for the fresh herring trade by the Cran Measures Act of 1908.

The cran had existed with countless local variations for centuries before the 1908 Act imposed a single figure of 37.5 imperial gallons and admitted only the cran and its quarter as lawful measures for fresh herring in England and Wales. The quarter cran basket became the ubiquitous object of the herring ports, stacked in thousands along the quays at Yarmouth and Lowestoft during the autumn voyage. Herring could still be sold by weight, by number or in bulk, but any sale by measure had to use one of the two.
