Scruple (℈)

Modern equivalent

20 grains = 1.296 grams

A tiny apothecary mass unit equal to exactly 20 grains, used by chemists to weigh powdered medicinal ingredients.

The scruple sat between the grain and the drachm in the apothecaries' system, giving physicians a workable step for dispensing potent powdered ingredients where a few grains either way genuinely mattered. Three scruples made one drachm, and twenty-four scruples one apothecary ounce.
